Start a new life

Sadly today I learned that a mate of mine, Shem McCauley, passed away over the weekend! I mixed his last album with him in my studio in Bangkok called “Start a new life”. See my old post Slacker (Shem’s stage name)

As I understand it he made arrangements with 2 of my close friends to carry out his last wishes which were to make as little fuss as possible, so there is not much detail about what happened and why, Shem was meticulous with everything about the recording and it seems even his own death also came under his ever critical eye.

So I am not making a fuss! but I wish to celebrate the life of a fellow artist starting with a video of one of the tracks from the album we mixed together. I put more details about Shem which I have copied from his You Tube for more of a background of him. The picture above is a picture taken in my studio, the last time I saw him we were creating, so I will take that memory with me

As a student in Brighton, England he established various sound systems alongside fellow South Coast boys Norman Cook and Carl Cox. Production success followed first as Nation 12 with “Listen to the Drummer”, and then after setting up stall with musician and producer Simon Rogers as Ramp, with the singles “Rock the Discotek” and “Stomp”. Both became international club classics.Looking to establish himself further, Shem created a hybrid of his own funk roots with more contemporary house sounds under the moniker of Slacker. The first Slacker single, “Feel Space”, a track that sounds as fresh today as when it was made, became an instant club hit. Shem’s third single “Scared” re-wrote the rule book on progressive house, a haunting anthem with enough funk to rock any dance floor. A record deal with XL followed and “Scared” along with follow-up single “Your Face” went top 40 in the UK and achieved major international success.

On the crest of this wave, Slacker established a live show and heavy touring alongside label mates The Prodigy ensued. It was while touring that Shem rediscovered his love of Djing, and in 1998 he hit the road properly again. He has been criss-crossing the globe ever since. In this time he has enjoyed residencies at Groovejet in Miami, Orbit in Lima, Peru, Slinky in Bournemouth and Fierce in Hong Kong, earnings platinum helpings of air miles throughout the world, especially across the U.S and Asia.

During this period Shem successfully juggled his travelling with further productions, ably assisted by studio partner Simon Rogers. A slew of remixes, such as Junkie XL, Trancesetters, Breeder and Bedrock – many still viewed as classics today – made the Slacker sound the most respected in the business. “Essential New Tunes”, dance chart Number Ones and features on top compilations became the norm. Eager to develop their release schedule, the decision was taken to launch Slacker’s own label, Jukebox in the Sky, and the singles have come thick and fast. Alongside their Northern Exposure classic, Head Honcho’s “Walls of Jericho”, came Slacker’s “Looky Thing”, played by a diverse selection of DJs from Seb to Jules to Seaman to Ivan Smagghe (of Black Strobe). Head Honcho’s “Medicine” is still being hammered by DJs, most consistently Sasha, a year after its release. The decision to concentrate on furthering the label has paid huge rewards, setting the imprint up as one of the strongest of its genre and enjoying regular licenses from the likes of Global Underground, Bugged Out! and Ministry of Sound.

The label continues to go from strength to strength with numerous Slacker original productions ready for release in the coming months, in conjunction with the recent launch of the label’s comprehensive website and webshop. Slacker’s next single, “Best Boyfriend”, will be out mid-November, packaged with remixes by The Scumfrog and Steiger. Currently Shem is back on the road and covering the globe with more than ever to offer, not only as a DJ but now also performing one of the most exciting and revolutionary laptop live shows on the market. Slacker? Far from it!

2012 the year of all years

We are here

So here we are! This is it! Now I know nobody really wants to talk about the December 2012 thing, but not talking about it will not make it go away! Maybe we can look at some of the things that have been said and perhaps come to our own conclusion.

I will make a summary at the end of this post so you all know my standpoint, for what it’s worth!

I have always been quite interested in things like Nostradamus, The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail, The Celestine Prophecies, The Secret etc, tarot card meanings, and it is from some of this reading that I know draw my own conclusions.

The Myans

So this is the big one – the Myan calender!

I’m sure everybody knows by now that the myans were a mesoamerican civilisation that existed from 2000 BC up until around 250 AD. We know little about them apart from their interesting carvings and art and of course their world famous calender. They were, however, very good at astrology, which I will show the important significance of later in this post. So the Myan calender ends on the date December 21st 2012 and is the end of the 5th 125 year cycle (according to the Myans).

Nostradamus

I am a keen reader of the Quatrains of Nostradamus, I am sure everybody knows who he is!

There are 2 points to note here, the first is that in his prophecies he puts the end of the Earth at the year 3786 or thereabouts, in fact he states the last war will last for 30 years followed by 1000 years of peace on Earth, referred to as ‘The Golden age’. The second point is there is what they call ‘The Lost Book’ of Nostradamus which has no writing, but just pictures given to his son. There is a page in this book that shows the alignment of Ophiuchus, the 13th sign of the zodiac (one we no longer use) and the centre of the milky way Galaxy (our home) all in 2012. There is fear of a comet called Nibiru heading right for us which may cause all kinds of nasty stuff but not a total wipeout, but I have heard these things before including a scary one this year that did not even come close!

Astrology is an interesting thing because it shows up in all sorts of civilisations through history and time. I am not talking about a small paragraph in the newspaper that predicts all of our lives, but I DO believe that as beings of nature, and as a big part of this Universe, the planetary alignment does affect things here on Earth and the human psyche, as the moon affects the tides here on Earth.

Something will happen this year, but I don’t think it will be the end of the world, it may be the end of the world as we know it, and I think that it will probably be a good thing, I just hope the transition won’t be too painful!

Spiritual Mystics

The spiritual among us believe that 2012 is the beginning of a new age where we crossover into a new dimension. I don’t really know too much about this but I will investigate and post here very soon. I will ask my friends at Destiny Rising Holistic Shop and post here

Well…these are exciting times! We start 2012 full of hope and anticipation, but at the same time pushing thoughts of the apocalypse, according to the Myans and perhaps Nostradamus (the lost book theory), out of our minds. There is the Olympics to look forward to (if you like that sort of thing) if you intend being anywhere near London.

I must admit there really is a positive vibe in the air, and it’s not just me – but I am always positive being a practician of “The Secret” and also being a ‘proper’ Buddhist.

Sadly in 2011 we said goodbye to Mr.Mac himself, Steve Jobs, Amy Winehouse, Ken Russell, Nohn Neville, Cory Smoot (GWAR), Mikey Welsh (Wheezer), Vesta Williams, Nick Ashford (Ashfod & Simpson), Jani Lane (Warrant), Peter Falk (Columbo), Ryan Dunn (Jackass), John Walker (The Walker Bros), Elisabeth Sladen (Dr Who), Liz Taylor, Mike Starr (Alice in Chains), Jane Russell, Alex Kirst (Iggy pop Drummer), Gerry Rafferty (Baker St) and probably more I missed out…RIP people x

Lets hope we don’t lose too many great legends this year.

Makes me feel lucky to be alive and with that in mind, I want to wish everybody a happy and prosperous new year!

Comedy Central lads

Lately I have been involved with a comedy event in various Pizza Express restaurants, [a] because I like comedy and [b] I like Pizza and [c] I like Pizza!

Thailand, the real view!

I caught something on youtube yesterday posted by my good friend in Bangkok! The video is a spoof about the way some media relays the news to the rest of the world about the troubles in Thailand.

During the whole conflict between the PAD (yellow shirts) and the red shirts (Taksins gang) it has always bothered me how he international media always seems to get it wrong and sensationalise the whole thing into distortion.

The Thai political structure is the main problem with Thai politics, NOT individuals as such.
The current government is in place because the last few elected prime ministers were just puppets, and in fact, relations of the corrupt guy who was kicked out in the first place.

Where in the world can a candidate say publicly that he will pay everybody to vote for him? and actually get elected as opposed to laughed out of politics? Where else in the world will people stand to be elected so they can change the laws to protect their former leader from criminal prosecution? At the moment, that is how it is in Thailand. Is THAT democracy?

Let’s hope it all gets resolved for the better! Soon! Although sadly, I don’t see much changing for a few years at least!

So how odd was that? Not a plane in the sky for around a week! As the news stations were starting to get bored with reporting on
the Icelandic volcano and the travel chaos, I could sense the next line of questions. ” Who’s fault is it? – why did the CAA
overreact? – Ryan air won’t compensate anybody for hotels like the other airlines.
The world has become such a predictable place, mostly led by the media!
I had just returned from dropping my son at my brothers place in Sweden, sorted my wifes visa and got stuck into work when…
booom – a new natural disaster!
For my experience, my wife and son were stuck in Sweden for an extra week, Easy jet, who I booked the flights with were so
